Jacob first entered motorsport at the age of 6 in Motocross. At seven he also started testing in karts, starting his first season at 8 years old. In that first year of karting Jacob completed 8 club meetings at Shennington & Whilton Mill, which enabled him to get rid of his novice plates.

In the winter of 2004 Jacob prepared for Super 1 with winter testing. It was during this testing period that Jacob met up with Rob Barff and Steve Warberton, two of the trustees from the Jamie Hunter memorial fund, who chose to support Jacob through equipment and funding enabling him to change into a new model kart from ZIP and enter into the 2005 National Championships, Super One and Stars of Tomorrow. In March of that season, again through the support of the Jamie Hunter memorial fund, Jacob joined the Young Guns Team, who's past members include : David Coulthard (F1), Anthony Davidson (F1), Gary Parfett (DTM), Jason Plato (BTCC) and Lewis Hamilton (F1).
